Don't know what your budget is, but you can get a used 250 amp DC welder for under $300 easily, FWIW. This is mine. Bought it for $200 at an industrial surplus place. Works perfectly. A couple weeks later they had another one just like it for $150.

That is incorrect. With AC, your polarity is constantly switching back and forth, (hence the "alternating current" nomenclature), which is the reason that it's not as smooth as DC.

Cut it up into as long of pieces as is practical. You'll be able to tell while doing that if the steel is too compromised to use.

My mistake. Yes, the first example you posted was what I was talking about. I tried the 4.5 inch version in an angle grinder. Was really surprised at how poorly it performed since I've had such good luck with other Diablo products. I might give that carbide tooth blade a try.

Not even remotely close. The Diablo diamond blade that I tried was garbage. Lasted maybe as long as two or three Weiler abrasive blades and costs ten times as much.

Angle grinder with a good cutoff wheel can be plenty accurate in the right hands. FYI, not all cutting wheels are created equal. I've found Weiler or Diablo to be the best. Don't waste your money. You can get abrasive blades for wood cutting circular saws, but they're dangerous, hard on the saw...

I bought my Lincoln Idealarc 250 at an industrial surplus place for $200. Welds beautifully. Quite common to find machines like that for under $400.

You should definitely check into that before fighting with it. Lots of sprockets for old McCulloch saws on Ebay.

I was kinda waiting to respond to this one to see if anyone had actually tried this. I work with chain saws for a living and do steel fabricating for a money saving (and occasional money making) "hobby". I really don't think it'll be worth it for you. What brand and model of saw is it?

Mine'd probably lift that much I imagine, although it doesn't extend 8'. I posted a picture of it on another thread here lifting 1500 lbs at about 3 ft. You may be able to just use a hub like mine for that kind of weight. I'd be looking to pick 2500-3000 at that distance.

The flux bends with it? I've done that with 7018 and 6010 but the flux where the bend is just flakes off.

Definitely worth learning. Here's a crane I made for my truck out of an old pickup crane I've had lying around for years and a hub from a Dana 80 axle. The weight it has hanging from it weighs 1500 lbs.

How thick was the material you were working with?

I use 7018 rod all the time in vertical and overhead positions. Works fine if you know how to do it. Used to use 6010 but any more I use 7018 for 95% of what I do.

Easiest way would be to buy the quick attach adapters and build a mount to fit your machine. That tractor is definitely out of the ordinary with the dump cylinders being on the outside of the arms like that. Should still be doable though. I've built adapters for a couple of machines using these...
