What would work great on your step is black pipe insulation foam. Most of the time it comes in ten foot pieces, but you can use the extra for something else. I use it on frame of my hand truck, works great when you don"t want to mark up what your moving. Pipe foam comes in all kinds of...

What are you doing today, spring time edition

The best way I have found to get rid of the gophers is to hook an 1/12 hose to my Honda generator muffler pipe, then the other end down the gopher hole. They take a nap and never wake up. Seems to work for me I am in Spanish Springs, Nv. about 15 miles north of Reno, Nv. I also found it woks on...

    welder problem

Seems we have two different thoughts on this . I do a lot of tig welding on 16 gauge to 24 gauge cold rolled steel. Welds have to be very fine and look good. I grind my tungsten to a very sharp tip, as sharp as I can get it. This is how you control your weld puddle . With a blunt tip on the...

    Welding shop

I have used an engine hoist to lift those mowers up high enough to work under them, works pretty good. If you have a tractor , hook it to the front loader bucket, works even better. Sounds like you have your third customer in your welding business. Good luck with the project.

    Bottle size for Tig ?

Flow meter is what you need, much more accurate than a regulator, Just make sure it is a flow meter that is made for argon . The argon scale will be marked on the tube the steel ball rides in. I bought mine online at Cyberweld.com, good meter and a good price. Lots of other online places too...

    Got a new project

I Have found the problem with mounting a hitch to the middle of the box is every time you push dirt or rocks or any other materials with the box , the hitch will take a beating. It ends up in the dirt or beat up by rocks, etc. Best way I have found is to weld a receiver tube to the box, up as...

    Bottle size for Tig ?

I use the 80 cf bottles. I have two .one on the welder and the other for a spare. Cost to fill the 80"s is a little less then your smaller bottles. Also on your pre flow and post flow, turn it down to 10 to 12 cfh as you are learning, gas will last a lot longer. I use 100 per cent Argon for...

    Basement door into basement project.

Aluminum would be the way to go. It would be the most expensive, but would last forever. would be the lightest of the three ,also no rust to worry about. Check the tanks to make sure they are private owned. The tank at the valve should not be stamped as to who owns the tanks, also check the year tanks were last tested and cert. date, good for 12 years, stamped on the side of the tank. Try changing your tungsten to 1/6", then use .030 or .035 ER70 Mig wire for your filler rod. It"s what I use and it works good. Also you don"t need to much amperage as the Mig wire melts good at low amps. Most of my Tig welding is on thin material, 16 or 18 gauge.

One more post on this subject. On the thinner materials, like 16 gauge steel, I use the 40 amps, 1/16 tungsten and .040 Er70-2 filler wire. I have found the larger wire will ball up on your tungsten do to not enough heat to melt it, turn up the amps and you burn threw. You can also use .035 mig...

It all depends. If you stick or touch your tungsten on your work piece, then you take the walk of shame to the grinder. Just stop and do it or your weld puddle will be out of control. Another thing is if your weld puddle wanders or widens out, time to sharpen the tungsten. You will also find...

    Stick as compared to mig.

Hi Propane1 6013, at 40 amps won"t work to well. If you are on ac even worse. Mig is the way to go. Try .024 wire and move around on your work piece as to not have to much heat build up. Takes a while this way, but it works.

What do you have for fire extinguishers. ?

I agree with Piloon, Wear the right gear when you are welding. I wear my leathers anytime I'm welding, Mig, Stick or Tig ,I wear them. Caught myself on fire before and it is not fun. Try to get out of your clothes when their on fire and your skin is burning , no fun , let alone get to a fire...
