    Boom Pole/Bale Spear/Trailer Mover

I made this several years ago from some scrap 4X4X1/4” square tubing. It’s pretty handy. Sorry the pics are sideways - maybe a moderator can fix them - my phone I were not able to. The bale spear is removable. Just take the boom pole off, insert the spear, and attach the top link to move bales...

    Scary find

After cutting and polishing, use some naval jelly on a Q-tip and rub it around on the cross section. The weld nugget will appear. Other acidic products can be used, but naval jelly is readily available.

    Scary find

Learning to cut and etch is a very important and often overlooked step to learning about penetration.

    Scary find

I picked this piece of 3” channel up off the road today. I’d say it’s probably a trailer crossmember. Notice that there is a bead on the face of the channel, but hardly any penetration. Elmer’s would probably do as well. Lucky it didn’t bounce and go through a windshield! The other end also has...

    New Tig Welder

Well, this COVID thing sure has messed with delivery times! Welder arrived at my supplier last week, right after we had left to spend New Years with our daughter and family. I picked it up yesterday and got it unpacked. I burned a few stick rods to see if I really want to give my son my old...

    What are you doing today?

We drove to Virginia to visit our daughter and son in law before the army moves them. The took us to NYC today to see the sights. Fun for a day, but can’t wait to get back to the farm.

    What are you doing today?

I hauled my last loads of corn yesterday - beans have been done for a few weeks. My wife asked what I was going to do next. “I don’t know, maybe buy a new welder?” Lincoln Squarewave 200 coming early next week.

Need to build something, but what?

I started out with a collapsible pole and that seemed like a good idea, but no provision for half mast. It did not do well with wind and then dealing with frozen parts when trying to take it down made me go this route. I bought the mount for the top of the pole, plus the rope and hardware. Now...

Need to build something, but what?

Here are a couple of pictures to show the flagpole and how I “hinged” it with some 3” channel iron. Sorry about them being sideways - phones do weird stuff

    Drill Presses

The speed on most newer drill presses is too high for bits over 1/2”. My Delta 12 speed turns from 3000 - 250 RPMs. I recently put a reduction kit on it that reduced speed by 75%. Now, top speed is 750 RPMs, which is plenty for small bits, and 62.5 RPMs, which is perfect for larger bits. Too...

    DIY swimming pool railing

Technically, this is from 2019, but isn't a year old, yet. Swimming pools come with wobbly ladders and I was afraid someone would get hurt. The railing is 1" square tubing. With the paint, it looks aluminum, but it's not. All bolts and screws are stainless steel.
