We get metal of various sorts that is discarded from one of our local "big-box stores". We have accumulated quite a bit of discarded commercial racks - some are damaged and some have never been used.
For one of the projects we are cutting the tops uprights to a usable length and using them as fence posts. We run two of the shelf rails form one post to the next and are fastening wood panels to the rails - so far it is looking pretty good.
We then use the bottoms of the uprights for the other project. Some of those uprights have been hit by forklifts and are bent - some beyond use. Those we can't use we are cutting the "feet" off of and welding them to good portions of the uprights - making uprights that have feet to sit on the ground and are the proper height. These we have been using to make a greenhouse.
Both projects are still in the early stages but both are working.
