What would make a good project for a young man (14) who just got his welding merit badge in scouts and wants some practice. I have a little harbor freight mig welder he has been tinkering with until my Hobart 140 is fixed.
I like the welding table idea too. Also carts with big wheels for any welding equipment. Growing up I saw a lot of cutting torch carts with car tires and axles that had the center of pivot/gravity just right for dragging them around a gravel lot or driveway.
I suggest a C-table frame made from 1" square tubing. Add a wood top and some slider pads to the bottom to make a handy piece of living room furniture. It's not too complicated, but using miter cuts and keeping everything square is good practice. Also, the planning, measuring, and cutting process is as valuable as the welding skills learned.
