I remember helping a relative to make a smoker from an old gutted refrigerator.
It actually turned out fairly well.
Being relatively tall it was easy to hang fish to be smoked.
We re enforced the bottom so that the wood would not burn thru and a short stove pipe with valve to slow combustion.
LOL, today you simply take $$'s and go to home depot.

Hey, nothing like re cycling!

I can suggest as to how I do that,
Propane is heavier than air so knowing that you stand it so that the opening is facing down.
I like to blow compressed air to accelerate the 'purging', so to speak.
Done it more than a few times! (still here, LOL)
B4 welding/cutting I like to run a flame (plumber's torch?) by the open threaded end.
Occasionally, but rarely, I might get a little 'poof' if there is any residual 'fumes' but harmless,.
Time and lots of moving air is the trick.

One day, I'm going to get the nerve to try one. But today, I'll leave it up to someone else
