What to look for in a welder for Beginners

you can use tig or mig for your aluminum or stainless, a spool gun would work best for aluminum wire, sorry if I am telling you something you know but I don't know how much experience you have. Welding Tips and Tricks is a great source for info.

    Welding googles

I borrowed a miller goggle from a welding supply store and I liked them except for after decades of reaching down to flip a hood up I kept snatching the face shield off of the googles. this was when miller first put them on the market so that issue may have been addressed by now. another option...

Trouble seeing weld and light entering helmet from behind and above

back light is usually a big factor as stated above. you may want to search for a shade 8 capable hood or buy a cheap passive hood and a shade 8 lens. I have a pipe liner with a gold shade 8 lens I use from time to time when conditions call for it and have had good luck with it. another option I...

    Bottle size for Tig ?

WOW, is that 600 bucks a year just to lease the tank? I have been paying a little over 100 per year and felt like that was too high. My bill to renew is on the bar, I guess I should open it. If it has gone up that much they will get it back. I own all my bottles except one 300cf oxygen bottle...

This is more a curiosity thing than anything, I may never need to weld aluminum again now that I am retired but maybe one of the pro's here can explain this for us. Scary find

Same here but when I was young and dumber I welded long shackles on a trailer to raise the bed. Bottle size for Tig ?

Stay with the vids when you can, Welding Tips and Tricks on Ytube has some great vids. My personal opinion is to get a 300cf bottle if you can, cost less per cuft and fewer trips to get a new bottle. I like tig welding but am not to good at it and rarely get the pretty stack of dimes look...

this thread has had staying power it seems so I don't feel so bad adding to it. I am retired now but before I left I bought a weldpro mig, tig, stick welder for the shop, don't remember the amperage but it was the higher amperage range model. Long story short it worked very well in all modes...

DC conversion for AC stick welder

I did the conversion on a L225, I didn't use a capacitor and was VERY disappointed with the performance. dstig1 nailed it, you plug your lead in on the the low tap and set the dial to 135 you will have 135 amps output, if you move the lead to the high tap and leave the selector on 135 amps you would read from the high scale, you now have 160 amps output.
